Appreciation Dinner Recap

The Red Willow Bible Camp gym was full of camp supporters on August 25 for the Quilters' Appreciation Dinner. The evening was the camp's way of saying 'thank you' to the many people who make the Quilt and Fine Art Auction a success each year.

Quilters' Choice Award: Jewel Box BatikGuests were also asked to vote for their favorite quilt for the upcoming quilt auction and the winner of the Quilters' Choice Award was Shelley Halvorson for her quilt 'Jewel Box Batik'.

A wonderful dinner prepared by Becky Delfs was served by camp staff and quilt committee members. Following the meal, Troy Gunderson, the director of Youth For Christ in Jamestown, was the featured speaker and musician.

Troy's presentation was a fascinating look back to a time when every barn had an array of lightning rods, weather vanes and cupolas used to identify the companies selling the equipment. His collection highlighted the many types of animals commonly used on rooftops.  An interesting piece of trivia he shared is that the word 'news' comes from the directions on a weather vane...north, east, west and south (n.e.w.s)!  The variety of glass globes was also surprising. Troy noted that many globes were broken when used for 'target practice'.

From the Director

by Denny Goetz

Our summer camps for 2009 are now over and we had an incredible summer!  The staff shared their time, talents, and their very souls with the campers.  They were a giving staff and truly believed that the “kids come first” at Red Willow Bible Camp.

This year’s programming was more diversified with emphasis on the outdoors and God's world around us, taking advantage of our 500 acres of beautiful and sacred land surrounding the camp.

Through our summer’s theme “For the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” Mark 10:45, we took steps in teaching our campers to appreciate and care for the living heavens and earth with spiritual connections with our God through his creation, within our theme of service to others.

If you asked the campers, we think they would tell you that the counselors helped them have fun, learn more about God and creation, make new friends, and feel more confident in expressing their faith and call to service.

If you asked the counselors, they would tell you that the kids also helped them grow in amazing ways:  in their leadership skills, communication, problem solving, their own spiritual walk with God, and the rewards of their summer service to the campers.

We know that Bible Camp inspires campers, staff, and visitors, bringing new life spiritually, emotionally, and physically.  It is one of the few means for escaping the routines of the world, being captivated for a week, and immersed in an atmosphere of prayer, Bible study, personal sharing, games, educational activities, good food, and social interactions.

Our hope and prayers for the 2009 Summer programming was to equip our campers to become better servants, just as Jesus was a servant to us. What better outcome could we ask of one another?
